Trooping the Colour, as on the Queen’s platinum jubilee, helps celebrate her “official” birthday in early June and also happens at all service bases.
On 12 June 1960 my Dad used the Army Trooping of the Colours in Berlin to “borrow” the Olympic Stadium to protest against Hitler’s use of the Olympics in 1936 for “sportswashing”. Or was it to de-Nazify the city? Neither term existed then.
His protest was to organise and play a cricket match as a silent protest. Very silent as it could not be publicised nor watched. My mum too my brother and I into Berlin to celebrate my birthday instead of watching and being the “scorer”.
We never talked about it at home, but occasionally joked that Hitler died 15 years previously. However my Dad’s silent protest affected me some I’m trying to track down the details from 62 years ago and will blog about it here
